penguinpage.net is a chronicle-in-the-making of several penguin research projects.
The project pages will provide a written accounts
of (in some cases ongoing) research and analysis in the form of weblogs. Although, to be precise, most of the entries are based on fieldwork logbooks and dairies of the researchers involved
and as such would probably better be called "backblogs".
Saying all this, it should be highlighted that penguinpage.net is a work in progress. Whenever our time permits (we are all active researchers), we will be adding new content, i.e. transcriptions of field diary entries plus photos, to the project pages. Currently there are two research project pages in development and online:
- Yellow-eyed penguin foraging (fieldwork conducted 2004-ongoing, NZ)
The most recent project focussed on the examination of sea-based factors that might play a role in the decline of Yellow-eyed penguin numbers on Stewart Island
- The Snares penguin project (fieldwork conducted 2002-2004, NZ)
Investigation of the foraging ecology of the Snares penguin, one of the least studied penguin species and one of the most successful crested penguin species if it comes to the stability of its population. Note: this project page is still in its infancy (started Dec '07 and will be updated substantially in January 2008). In the meantime you may visit the project's old website: http://www.eudyptes.net
In the next months, two more project pages will be established and updated at regular intervals:
- Foraging Ecology of Little penguins (fieldwork conducted 2000-2001, NZ)
A study that compared the foraging success and its consequences on breeding outcome in Little penguins at two sites - Oamaru and Motuara Island - in New Zealand
- Humboldt penguins in Chile (fieldwork conducted 2001-2003, Chile)
A project that focussed on the vulnerability to human distrubance of the endangered Humboldt penguin in Chile. Side projects examined nest attendance patterns and the first comprehensive population census on Isla Chañaral
